Among Us! and Fall Guys – The Surprising Successful Games of The Year

If you’ve been on the web for the last few months, you’ve perhaps come across Among Us and Fall Guys – two incredible games that have taken the gaming world with a storm. The success that has followed the two games may leave you wondering – is simplicity the way to go when it comes to the gaming industry? Read on to find out why the games are successful.

Among Us Overview

Originally launched in June 2018 by Innersloth, it was the second game in the developer’s line up. The game’s concept is stirred by ‘TTT’ – a game mode in the famous Steam game Garry’s Mod. Basically, it entails one player trying to eliminate the others without being noticed. Based on the number of players in the game, Among Us allocates one or two players with an impersonator role, while the other players are teammates.

The teammates are required to move around the map and perform several tasks. The impersonators, on the other hand, are required to eliminate the teammates without being noticed. Whenever a player comes across a body, the player needs to report it and initiate a meeting with the crewmates to find the impersonator.

The impersonators must defend themselves and try to take the culpability to a teammate. Afterward, the space-suit-dressed players take a vote to determine the player to be evicted from the map. Well, this process will continue until the teammates or impersonator wins.

If the teammates either finish all the tasks on the map or votes off all the game’s impersonators, they win the game. On the other hand, the impersonators will win, provided they kill sufficient players to make the number of impersonators and crewmates equal. The impersonators can sabotage tasks and utilize vents in the floor to help in eliminating the crewmates. However, there’s a high risk they may be caught in the process.

The game is fun and chaotic when more players are in an online call concurrently, but it risks eliminating several friendships. As you can see, Among Us is an easy game to play, and you only need roughly thirty minutes to master it. The best thing is that it’s accessible for free to mobile devices.

Fall Guys Overview

Yes, Fall Guys is also a straightforward game to play. However, mastering it is quite tricky. Mediatonic released this game back in August 2020, and it became an instant hit. If you want to win it, you have to move your jelly bean character round the Total Wipeout-like course faster than the other players in your lobby.

A lobby contains 60 players. So, each player will be running to get to the end of the course ahead of everybody else. The first 45 players will be eligible to get to the next round, doing away with the players that failed to make it in time. Well, this process repeats with a series of teamwork maps and racing maps until 8 players remain.

Based on the map, the last 8 players will contend to either get to the finish line first or become the last man standing. Note, it’s a typical classic battle royal game as the winner gets a crown to wear for their character.

Why are the Games Popular and Successful?

Fall Guys was launched about two-and-a-half years after the release of Among Us. During its closed beta period – a week before its official release - Fall Guys was the most-watched game on Twitch. After its release, the basic version retailed at $19.99 on Steam. However, PS4 players who were subscribed to the PlayStation Plus service at the time got it for free.

In the first 24 hours, millions of players downloaded the jelly bean battle royal. The game was becoming a hit and the most played on Steam. Certainly, it became so popular that the servers crashed due to the high number of gamers playing.

On the other hand, Among Us didn’t get a high hype in the gaming world compared to Fall Guys. The designers developed the game to be a local-online multiplayer game that’s available on mobile devices. For a big part of the game’s cycle, only about 50 players played. Perhaps the reason why players got bored with the game is that it only had a single map to play on.

All in all, the inclusion of extra content to the game stimulated more players to play until it started gaining popularity around July 2020. Towards the end of August and the start of September, the game was slowly catching up with Fall Guys as popular faces on Twitch and YouTube were playing the game.
